Welcome to the School Counseling webpage! My name is Terri Tye, the School Counselor, and this marks my 4th year at Shearer Elementary! I worked for 19 years at Providence Elementary as the counselor and began my career as a teacher at Shearer many years ago. My counseling corner is designed to provide you with information on counseling related topics and resources, as well as keep you up to date on school activities.
During the year, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s academic and/or social/emotional health and well-being, please contact me at school at (859) 744-4978 where you can always leave a voice mail. You can also reach me by e-mail at email@example.com. I look forward to working with you and your children this year! I wish all of our Shearer Elementary families a healthy, happy and safe academic year!
In the fourth grade, we recently spent some time reading the book, Simon’s Hook by Karen Burnett. It is a great book that provides ideas to try whenever you are being teased or put down. By comparing teases to fishing hooks, Simon’s Grandma shows him ways to “not bite” and to avoid being caught. In class, we did role plays with a fishing pole and hooks (teasing), and tried to think of ways we could act in real life. As a class, we talked about how we cannot control the actions of others, but we can control our responses to their actions. We had lots of fun learning important lessons.
IMPORTANT TESTING DAY FOR 3RD GRADE
All Shearer 3rd graders will be taking a cognitive ability test in February. This test will be given in the morning and will be finished before lunch. Please make every effort to be present that day and make appointments in the afternoon. Make sure that your students get a good night’s rest and eat breakfast so they can do their best on the test. Make ups will be given, but students usually perform better when they are with their classroom. Thank you so much for your help in this matter!

SCHOOLS TO CAREERS FIELD TRIP
The 4th graders at Shearer recently took a field trip funded by the Schools To Careers grant and The Shearer Family Resource Center. They visited George Rogers Clark Area Technology Center and learned about many career paths that they can study beginning their freshman year of high school. They were than treated to a wonderful lunch at Frischs Big Boy. The next stop was the Winchester campus of Bluegrass Community and Technical College. The students enjoyed a tour and learned about opportunities to further their higher education in the future. It was a great day and our Shearer students were well behaved and received compliments everywhere that we visited.
