Coupon Book Sales Have Begun

We are excited about our current fundraiser entitled “TODAY’S YOUTH – TOMORROW’S FUTURE.”  The profits from this fundraiser will be used to purchase the Interwrite boards and sound systems for each classroom to complete the Intelligent Classroom project we began a few years ago.  The money from the previous year sales helped purchase projectors, digital document cameras, and laptop computers for the classrooms.  We have the opportunity to raise $8900 if we sell all the coupon books.

Your child has been given one coupon book with a value of more than $700.  Each book contains coupons for “BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE” food or entertainment in Winchester.  Each book sells for $10.

We encourage you to provide friends, co-workers, relatives, and neighbors the opportunity to purchase a coupon book.  The books make a great Christmas present or stocking stuffer.  The sale goes through December 19, 2008.

New School Start Time and Attendance

It is important that teaching and learning time not be interrupted.  Learning time begins at 7:40.  Your child should be in their classroom at that time.  Traffic is very hectic each morning and many times students are late due to traffic.  In order to prevent tardies, allow ample time to get to school each morning.

Attendance in school is very important for all grade levels.  Please see that your child is at school and on time each day.     After 6 absences a doctor’s note is required for the absences to be excused.

Helping your child

Reading is a skill, and it gets better with practice.  Research shows that kids who spend as little as 30 minutes a day reading books, magazines and newspapers are more likely to become good readers.  Encourage your child to spend time reading everyday.

Absence Line

When your child is absent, please help us by calling the attendance line to report an absence.  The office is very busy and it will help us tremendously if you would follow this procedure instead of calling the office.  The number is 745-3094 and is on by 4:00 PM until 8:00 AM the next day.  Call during this time and leave a message.  If requested, we will gather your child’s homework and have it ready for you to pick up by 2:30.

Recycle old Printer Cartridges

Send in your old printer ink cartridges and earn money to pay for computer lab supplies.   Printer cartridges may be recycled by placing them in the box in the computer lab.  Just last year we purchased new headphones for the entire lab with money for this recycling project.

SBDM

The Site-Based Decision Making council meetings are open to parents, teachers, and community members.  Decisions are made that govern the academic process of Strode.  Our SBDM meetings are the second Thursday of each month.  The next meeting will be December 11, 2008 at 5:00.    Minutes and the agenda are posted in the hallway in front of the cafeteria.

The parent representatives for 08-09 school year are Robert Abner and Jo Powers.

Fee Money

The elementary school fee is $15.00 for all students.  This money is very important.  It helps us purchase instructional materials such as workbooks, Scholastic Magazine and Weekly Readers that will be used in your child’s classroom.  If you have not paid please do so as soon as possible.

Eating lunch with your child

Parents are encouraged to visit Strode Station.  If you plan on eating with your child please send a note with your child or call the school in advance.  This will help the cafeteria plan for the proper number of meals to be served each day.   There have been a few occasions when the proper number of meals have not been prepared as a result of a high number of parents eating at school.  Please phone ahead to allow our cafeteria to prepare the proper number of meals.

We are having a large number of lunch charges.  District policy states that a child may not have more than $3 in charges.   Please pay all charges as soon as possible.  Children with current lunch charges will be given an alternative meal and not be able to purchase snacks until all charges are paid.  All charges carry over to the next school year.

Change in pick up procedure

Notify your child’s teacher in writing if there is to be a change in the normal dismissal process.  We cannot accept these changes over the phone for security reasons.  Please understand that this is for the safety of your child.

There will be a $25 charge for NSF checks.  Nonpayment of NSF checks will be turned over to the County Attorney.
